Collage Art & Visual Theatre
〰️
Alongside her theatre productions, which have been performed at guest engagements and festivals in 45 countries worldwide, Karin Schäfer has increasingly focused on her visual art in recent years.
While her plays have always been situated at the intersection of performing and visual arts, she is now taking her stories off the stage and bringing them directly onto and into her images—combining her passion for travel with her love of maps, atlases, patterns, and shapes.
The central approach in her work (both in theatre and in her visual art) has always been the technique of collage—the deconstruction, assembly, and combination of elements from other contexts, and their integration into new perspectives, scenes, actions—and images.
Her current series of works, SEAmaps, SEAcrets, and SEAngles, are based on world maps and nautical cartography from the historical era to the present day. They combine a love of the sea, a fascination with ships, containers, and ports, with a wanderlust and the joy of "getting lost"—in foreign lands, bygone times, somewhere between cities, countries, islands, and oceans.
Karin Schäfer's work has been seen since 2018 in a series of solo and group exhibitions and at various art fairs. Her works have been sold to Germany, Austria, and the United States; among other things, three of her works were acquired for the permanent collection of the art collection on the cruise ship Sun Princess.
