Why "Art and Sea" (Kunst und Meer)?
Kunst und Meer brings together what has always belonged together: maritime experience and artistic creation.
Artists have always sought and found inspiration at the edges of the sea.
Endless vastness, blurring horizons, and constant movement challenge both the mind and the hand. By the sea, artists find the long-awaited peace as well as stimulating challenges. They find motifs and motivation, muse and ammunition.
For the sea is never the same, yet it seems familiar and intimate to us. It separates and connects in equal measure; it invites crossing, yet fights back with all its might. Some days it invites us to linger in peace, on others it deters us with unbridled wildness. Some days our own image is reflected in it, on others it devours us whole.
Perhaps you, dear readers, have noticed:
The sea has all this in common with art!
Both are full of contradictions, of the most diverse and conflicting manifestations; both invite and challenge.
Both art and the sea can be friendly, accommodating, simply beautiful… and then again vicious, provocative, dangerous.
Art is reflected in the sea; the sea is reflected in art.
But the sea is not only a motif for and reflection of art; it is also a carrier and medium for its dissemination. Across all seas, people have brought their culture, their skills, and their art with them and to others. Sometimes enriching, sometimes threatening, very often connecting.
Everything we know, can do, and understand today was once carried across the seas and brought to all continents. Art and culture are more global today than ever before, and yet, or perhaps precisely because of this, they are more diverse than ever.
To depict this diversity and to provide a platform for all the aspects that connect art and the sea: that is the goal, the meaning, and the purpose of Kunst und Meer.
We invite you to be part of it!
